About the Project

The Adam Benjamin Gateway Station project consists of redeveloping the current Gary station at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Broadway. The $120 million project begins in fall 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2011.

The redesign includes:

  • Two parking garages with a combined total of 2000 parking spots, both equipped with lighting and high-tech security surveillance cameras, as well as security and police
  • A 60,000 square foot train station for passengers, including seating areas, restrooms, a coffee shop, and a newsstand
  • High level boarding platforms
  • An entire block of retail shops down Fourth Avenue
  • An enclosed above-ground walkway

The proposed tenants include the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which will have a presence inside the station, along with an office for local/county/state police, an information booth, a bank, cleaners, food and restaurants, and retail shops.

The high-level boarding platforms will be accessible to persons with disabilities and will shorten loading and unloading time for passengers. City and county employees will be provided parking access.

The new station will cut seven minutes off the train's travel time in both directions. An expanded Gary Public Transporation Corp. presence in Miller will transport passengers from Miller to the new facility.

During construction, a temporary train station will be erected on the property at Jackson Park next to Third Avenue, along with a temporary 500 space parking lot. Once the new station is completed, that area will be restored.
